windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected

I am running Windows 7 home premium. My laptop, a Dell studio 1745 won't boot windows. I got an error code 2000-0142, status 79. I booted my computer from my installation disk & went to the command prompt. I ran chkdsk on all my drives. It found a problem on drive E. It says to run chicks /f. When I do it says "windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected". Chkdsk doesn't find any errors on disk C or D. When I put another wardrobe in the laptop it boots up fine. Is there any way to save my pictures & documents?

How to add a custom rule for "managed memory" to DebugDiag 2 Collection?

$

Hi,

     First of all, thank you for the roll-out of DebugDiag 2.1 :)

My question is very simple (winch I mentioned in the subject),

I've to have a support from  DebugDiag 2 Collection UI, that I want to select my custom rule which is specific for .Net managed memory, but as of now I do not see any option provided in the UI. Instead it shows only three options,

{1. crash, 2. performance and 3. native (non .net) memory and handle leak}

Please tell me, did I miss something here.

It is pretty clear that the DebugDiag 2 Analysis UI provides such an option where it shows my custom rule in addition to the existing built-in rules. But why is it missing in DebugDiag 2 Collection UI?

That is if I've no option to collect data for managed memory then how DebugDiag 2 Analysis UI displays analysis rule for "DotNetMemoryAnalysis" under "Memory Pressure Analyzer"?

Using maps in ETW manifest

Hi guys, Can we use the ValueMap for negative values in the ETW manifest files? I have added a value map in my manifest file for etw provider, but message compiler fails to compile that and returns below error:

Testmanifest.man : error : Failed trying to parse file. xesqlminpkg.man(9282): Error 0xc00ce16a. At Li
ne=9282, Column=81, Union doesn't support this value.
The attribute 'value' with value '-0x2' failed to parse.

And this is how I defined the value map:

      <valueMap name="lock_return_code">

        <map value="3" message="$(string.DEADLOCK)"/>
........

        <map value="-1" message="$(string.NOTNEEDED)"/>

      </valueMap>

If I change -1 above to 1 then it works fine.

Windows is unable to locate the Task Manager.

Hello,

I recently had a frozen application which won't close by any means and I found this software called "process explorer" (which I later found out that it can also be downloaded through microsoft.com? something to do with sysinternals.com) to do the job but, it didn't do the job either and was annoying as hell. I did the mistake of replacing the real task manager with this software (using an option in the menu bar) and the task manager won't start now. :(  even tried to start the app by running the taskmge.exe as an administrator and I am the only admin of this computer. It still won't run.

Since this "process explorer" does not need to even be installed (because it comes as a .rar file and has to be run from there without an option to install it), I'm finding it even harder to get back to where I was before using it.

The error message on the windows says "Windows cannot find the 'C:\windows\sysytem32\taskmgr.exe' Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

Thanks for any help.

Event Trace Sessions in Perfmon: errors related to NT Kernel Logger and NDISLogger

$

Hello - I have recently begun to receive errors "The Data Collector Set or one of its dependencies is already in use" when attempting to generate a System Health Report on Windows 7, and in Event Viewer I see associated errors "Session 'NT Kernel Logger' failed to start with the following error: 0xC0000035". Also, apparently unconnected except that the problem started at the same time, on each boot I receive an error in Event Viewer "Session 'NDISLogger' failed to start with the following error: 0xC0000035". In Performance Monitor, under Event Trace Sessions, I see sessions "NT Kernel Logger" and "NDISLogger", both running. I understand that there can be only one running NT Kernel Logger session and, indeed, after manually stopping the instance in Performance Monitor, the System Health Report can be generated correctly with no errors. On some other Windows 7 machines, I note there is no NT Kernel Logger visible in Event Trace Sessions, and no NDISLogger. So, my main question is - can I safely delete the NT Kernel Logger session in Performance Monitor Event Trace Sessions? And, for that matter, can I delete NDISLogger, or should I just ignore the Event Viewer error given that at least one instance of NDISLogger appears to be running? Is there any way of determining where these sessions came from, and if they "should" be there? Also, all these sessions seem to be set to log into C:\PerfLogs\Admin yet there are no associated logs (though I can generate logs from my own User Defined Data Collector Sets) - so, what do these Event Trace Sessions actually do? Many thanks for any help - Mike.

How can i calculate the time taken for the processes to start up in Windows.

I can get the start time of the process , but i need to know how long my process takes to launch from clicking the process exe.

Example:  If i start the visual studio , it loads some libraries and takes some time to accept input from user. I need to log that time duration.

Why can't I fix error code 8004FF80

I need to get rid of MSE because it is causing problems in that it always fails to update but all tries seem to encounter this error. It is something to do with turning off a service which Microsoft in their inimitable way have decided I should not be able to do.

Please stop telling me what I want to do with my machine, I am a big boy and can do that myself - so now tell me how to turn this Microsoft Antimalware service off - it is a pain and I don't need it.

I'm working on a Quickbooks issue and I require a little assistance. "Nearly" everytime the user attempts to print through Quickbooks it crashes. Everything else on this machine is running fine. I ran procdump 6 times while trying to print from different areas and consistently receive this output:
