Perfmon bug w/ Windows 10 / Server 2012? Incorrect Process::Virtual Bytes values

$

Hi,

Not sure where to create a bug report or to get confirmation that this is a bug so I thought I'd start here.

I've noticed that the values in Perfmon for Process::Virtual Bytes are radically different for a number of processes when running on Windows 10 / Server 2012 than, say, Windows 7.

As an example I'm tracking Virtual Bytes the process Services for both operating systems, and Windows 10 (and Server 2012) is reporting 2,199,069,044,736.000, and Windows 7 is reporting 50,900,992.000. Obviously the machines are processing different loads but the difference in magnitude of 100,000 seems a little extreme.

I also see the same issue with the processes svchost, WmiPrvSE, Isass, MicrosoftEdgeCP, explorer, MsMpEng, MicrosoftEdge, dwm, csrss, Taskmgr, RuntimeBroker where they're all showing a value of greater than 2,000,000,000,000.

I don't see it, oddly enough, with java, firefox, or system.

Counter registry key of Perflib keeps being deleted

Hello,

We currently have an issue on multiple servers running on Windows Server 2012 with our monitoring tools (including perfmon) that relies on performance counters.

I will skip the details but it turns out that the Multi String Value "Counter" (and "Help" as well) from the the registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib\009

keeps disappearing after a while.

As a result the performance counters are broken on the server and we would need to run the commannd "lodctr /R" to fix it every day!

Does anyone know how to track the value in the registry so I can find what is removing it ? I tried to use the Process monitor (Procmon.exe) and set a filter on the registry key but even thought I tracked my actions in regedit, I did not trace anything between yesterday and today and the values were still gone !

Thanks for the feedback

Olivier

MS Windows should implement working CPU temperature monitoring in WMI service.

There are numerous performance counters on Windows system. But one of the most important and critical performance counters of all is not currently implemented, yet: Temperature of CPU, system, graphic card and HDD.

Temperature of computer system is one of the most essential factors for monitoring stability of any computer system, be it server, personal computer, or embedded system. Most of the modern PC platform has array of sensors in it that monitors temperature of CPU/core(s), motherboard, enclosure,  graphics card, power voltage, fan speed, etc. Even modern CPU itself ( like intel Core series and AMD Athlon's) has internal Digital Thermal Sensor (DTS) register right on the chip.

But MS Windows ( as of Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008) does not provide any consistent and working API or library support for utilizing such hardware monitoring sensors . This is big deficiency for modern operating system, considering that MS Windows currently provides such a insignificant service like portable device API for external sensor (like temperature sensor and GPS).

User, admin or developer who wish to monitor such sensors has to rely upon third-party tools likeHardware Sensors Monitor, SpeedFan, RealTemp, CoreTemp, CPUID Hardware Monitor Pro , or some GPU tools likeRivaTuner (for GPU hardware  monitoring) etc.

There are some WMI classes that seems to be intended to do such jobs like
WMI MSAcpi_ThermalZoneTemperature or Win32_TemperatureProbeclasses. But MSDN document clearly states that they are NOT implemented yet. From WMI documentation:
"Current implementations of WMI do not populate the CurrentReading  property. The CurrentReading property's presence is reserved for future use."
-- i.e. the temperature values are not updated at all.

See this MSDN VB forum thread:

http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vblanguage/thread/95985bdd-7c79-4e8b-bd90-e5b4763032cc/

As post by rea1unity and Denise Moore said, currently there is no way to monitor CPU temperature with Windows WMI service.

On the contrary in Linux platform, reading CPU temperature is as easy as just reading some special device file. Linux kernel has been supporting such temperature sensors long ago. There are many Linux CPU/system thermometer programs that utilizes such a kernel service.

Here are my feature requests:

Windows kernel or WMI service should support readings from such modern hardware monitoring sensors. For example:
1. CPU temperature and voltage sensors.
2. Motherboard monitoring sensor chips like LM78 or Winbond. (temperature, power voltages, fan speed)
3. 3D graphics card  (Nvidia, ATI/AMD GPU's) on-chip sensors and performance counters (like temperature, clock speed, fan speed, 3D GPU graphics workload and GPU information/statistics available from GPU BIOS)
4. HDD S.M.A.R.T. temperature readings. It is currently available as obscure "VendorSpecific" data. But it should be consistent property across all HDD vendors and models.

Hardware monitoring and ensuring system stability are one of the primary job to do for any modern operating system. Microsoft Windows should provide such a functionality by itself, not relying on third party libraries.

Please feel free to talk about any opinions on these suggestion.

Developing custom performance counters: Current state?

Hello!

I have watched episode 82 to 84 on Defrag Tools channel on Channel9 (https://channel9.msdn.com/Shows/Defrag-Tools/Defrag-Tools-84-Performance-Counters-Part-3?ocid=EntriesInArea) and tried to experiment with the example they used there.

But I had a problem. They used a version 2.0 of the schema of the manifest file.

<counters
xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2005/12/counters"
schemaVersion="2.0">

Version 2.0 seems not to be documented anywhere in public. Running ctrpp.exe on that manifest went well, but installing performance counters with lodctr leads to error code 1150 on my windows 7 machine.

When I fall back to schemaVersion 1.1, i finally manged to get the example working, but i really like to now, what's the issue with the new version.

So: where can i find some current documentation?

Best regards

Gerriet

Looking for a reference of available predefined performance counters by Windows versions

I was only able to find a reference of these counters in the Windows 2003 Resource Kit archives (28 thousand ! pages pdf). Nothing more recent. Is there any reference guide having these by Windows versions?

I managed to pull some of these through Powershell and .Net classes, but it only works if I know at least the categories that are predefined. I would really like to have an official list released by Microsoft or something.

ETW: EventRecordCallback not called for Config Info records on Windows 10

$

Hi,

Some time ago I wrote a program in C++ to convert network packet data from a netsh trace ETL file to Wireshark PCAPNG format.  The program has been working fine until I migrated to Windows 10.

The problem relates to the availability of network interface (NIC) information.

If I capture a netsh trace on Windows 7, the ETL file contains records from an un-named provider with a GUID of {01853a65-418f-4f36-aefc-dc0f1d2fd235}, and some of these have NIC information.  When I run my converter program the EventRecordCallback is called correctly for this un-named provider and I'm able to parse the interface information.

If I capture a netsh trace on Windows 10, the ETL file contains records from an un-named provider with a GUID of {9b79ee91-b5fd-41c0-a243-4248e266e9d0}, and some of these have NIC information.  There are no records from the Windows 7 un-named provider. When I run my converter program the EventRecordCallback is never called with the a ProviderId of {9b79ee91-b5fd-41c0-a243-4248e266e9d0}, even though it is correctly called for records with other Provider IDs e.g. those records that contain packet data.

How can I ensure that my EventRecordCallback routine is called for all Providers?

Thanks and regards...Paul

PS: I built the converter with VS 2013 on Windows 7.

Recovery mode doesn't recognize me as Admin

Tried to resolve this on the Windows forum, was recommended to try here, hope you can help. My Asus laptop, Win10 Home build 14393, wouldn't boot (stuck at spinning circle) so I entered into the Recovery partition to try to roll back to a previous restore point. In this mode it did't recognize me as an administrator (only user on computer). Upon entering Recovery, message read "You need to sign in as an Administrator to continue, but there aren't any administrator accounts on this PC". And the only option was "Forgot your password or don't see your account?" After clicking this option the computer restarts back into Recovery Mode, and now there are options, but they require Admin status to proceed. Eventually I was able to boot back into Windows, so I unhid the Admin account to test, but Recovery still accused of not having an Admin account. Is this a known issue? Can you recommend a fix? Many thanks!

John Manship,

Happy User.

Disk defragmentation via runas command not working

I was trying to run the disk defragmentation operation in the command prompt via the "runas" command.

This is what I typed in: runas /user:admin "defrag /C"

It starts the defragmentation of the hard drive but then the program almost immediately ends after I enter the password for the admin account. I am attempting to run this on the administrator account, so I really don't know what's the problem. Am I not using the runas command correctly?

I have the most recent version of Windows 10 running

"Disk Defragger not installed" error on Windows 10

I recently started getting this error: Disk Defragger not installed" when I right-clicked on a drive and selected Tools to Optimize any drive. I could not find any solution on Microsoft support. Finally, I found it here: http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/97/1/Error-The-Disk-Defragmenter-is-not-installed-on-your-computer-when-launching-Disk-Defragmenter-in-Windows-Vista.html

I recall that I had iObit software installed on my Windows 7 PC. When I upgraded to Windows 10, I uninstalled it. However, it turns out, it had "hijacked" my registry and set default to iObit Smart Defrag. So, uninstalling disabled this function instead of defaulting back to Microsoft tool. Microsoft should prevent this, or at least restore default programs when custom replacements are uninstalled.

two drivers are causing CPU system, Internet system, and over all. If I remove these two drivers , do I replace them, ,if so, what would be best, or, is it possible , that to not have to replace them at allI

Hi!

Every time I boot up my pc, the first message I see is: "you enter the wrong password", when I have done anything yet. I click back now I see I have two accounts, with the same name and the same picture. One is with my Email address, the other no.  I go to the one with my email to enter, is ok.

Now, when I want to delete the other account, and I go to the managmente screen, there is only one account, no more. How can I remove this inconvenient every time I start my pc.

Thank you for your answer.
